Heatstroke, overheating
ATTENTION
The heat has started, which is coupled with very high humidity. Let's pay attention to the komondors. To help with this, I have collected some important things;
No matter how we explain it, unfortunately, we have to accept that the weather of our planet changes, which we experience from season to season!
It's summer here and the mercury on the thermometer is creeping up, we suffer from the heat, but not only us humans; our favorites too, who are even more tested by the summer heat!
You may think that the komondor's fur warms you in winter and cools you in summer, but this misconception (!) does not protect our pet from overheating and/or heat stroke, in fact!
We need to do everything we can to prevent this, and if the problem has already happened, we need to be able to recognize it and know what to do to help our dog survive!
Prevention;
The komondor's coat must be sheared every year, just as a shepherd shears his flock every spring. The length of the fur really reflects the taste of the owner, but keeping it in full fur endangers the life of our pet and even if it does not die immediately, the effect of heat on the heart greatly shortens the lifespan of our pet. !
Trimming the hair should be done in the spring, when the frosts have passed, but the real heat hasn't arrived yet! Of course, it can be cut throughout the summer, but in this case you have to pay attention to the fact that the komondor's fur grows by approximately 8 mm in a month, so it is worth counting when the November cold comes. by the end of October, there should be at least 3 cm of fur, which is perfectly enough for a Komondor!
During the entire summer period, we must provide our dog with a shady, cool place where he can walk at any time during the day.
Always have fresh, cold water in front of him. let's also make sure that it is in the shade!
Every year, 30-40 komondors die as a result of heat stroke or its complications. We need to know how to recognize them and what to do in such a case!
Symptoms of heatstroke, overheating;
- Heavy, wheezing breathing
- Elevated body temperature (the ideal body temperature measured through the rectum in dogs is 38-39 degrees, if our dog's body temperature reaches 40-42 degrees, it is already overheated and if we do not start cooling it, it can get heat stroke.)
- Excessive thirst, excessive need to drink
- Increased heart rate and rapid heartbeat
- Light gums, dark red tongue
- excessive drooling
- vomit
- diarrhea
- convulsions
- glassy, confused eyes
- weakness
-black out
These symptoms can indicate overheating not only together, but also separately, which can lead to heatstroke very quickly!
From overheating to heat stroke;
If the dog's body temperature reaches 42°C or higher, it results in heat stroke. The body's cells begin to die, the brain swells, causing seizures, and dehydration can cause irreversible kidney damage. All this happens in a few minutes!
It is important that the owner does everything possible to avoid overheating, because by the time the dog shows symptoms of heatstroke, it is unfortunately often too late to save it.
What to do?
If you think; your pet or any other dog has heat stroke, you must act immediately!
- Take it to a cool, shady or air-conditioned place!
- It is important to know that the dog can cool down mostly through its belly and paws! These areas must be gradually cooled so that the dog's body temperature can decrease!
- Pay attention to the gradation!
- Never put water in the dog's mouth if he can't swallow it himself!
- If the dog is panting heavily, but is on its feet and conscious, measure its temperature!
- If the dog's temperature is around 40°C, offer it with lukewarm water and make sure it doesn't swallow it! Give him only a small amount of water, as large amounts of water can cause him to vomit, increasing the risk of dehydration.
- If he can't stand on his own feet, doesn't respond to your voice, touch, or sight, check his breathing and heartbeat, make sure he doesn't have convulsions.
Check your dog's temperature again after a few minutes.
If it drops below 40°C, stop the cooling process, as further cooling will lead to blood clotting or hypothermia.
- In any case, call the vet and if you have somewhat stabilized the dog's condition, take him to the vet!
Telephone notification is important; exactly what condition is your dog in, so that by the time you arrive with him, they will prepare for his arrival!
Let's take care of them so they can take care of us too!
